Hey there,
I am a doc and a bluegrass mandolinist. I have been lucky and had very little pain in my life. I also am not a great artist.
To play great bluegrass music, one has to have experienced suffering. I told one artist I loved the music, but I felt I would never reach the next level, because I couldn’t hit the road- too much of a homebody.
He said, “Well, Doc, for me I ain’t got nothing to come home to.”
Once Moose Dooley, my banjo player, and I listened to a singer wail out some sad saga. The man was red-faced and sweating. I’m sure his blood pressure was up.
I turned to Moose and said, “Man, I’d love to be able to sing like that.”
Moose said, “Doc, you ain’t drunk enough whiskey to sing like that. You ain’t suffered like that man.”
Moose was right. Much great art comes out of psychic pain.
As a doc and semiprofessional performer, I see a lot of musicians, and all sorts of pain. In the bluegrass world, my job is to help them if I can, and I do my best.
